Rio Vista is a city located in the eastern end of Solano County, California in the San Francisco Bay Area, on the Sacramento River, in the Sacramento River Delta region. The population was 4,571 at the 2000 Census. Incorporated in 1893, Rio Vista is located on Highway 12 on the eastern edge of Solano County. Perched on the bank of the Sacramento River, this thriving delta community is in the heart of one of the greatest outdoor recreation areas in the nation. It features more than 1,200 miles of waterways for boating, windsurfing, water-skiing, fishing and swimming. Rio Vista also recently opened its new airport and golf course. In addition, commuters who work in eastern Contra Costa County and the San Joaquin Valley increasingly call the area home. The City of Rio Vista is one of the fastest growing cities in Solano County and the California Delta. The largest landmark, the Rio Vista Bridge, is one of many drawbridges designed by Joseph Strauss, architect of the Golden Gate Bridge. Situated on the historic Sacramento River with a silhouette of the rolling Montezuma Hills to the south, Rio Vista and the surrounding Delta maintains a relaxed vacation-like atmosphere for everyone! Today, Rio Vista still maintains an easy going "small town" attitude even though it is central to the two largest population centers in Northern California. The local merchants, restaurants, and community organizations provide something for everyone. Rio Vista was visited by a lost Humpback whale in 1985, despite being 60 miles (100 kilometers) upriver from the Pacific Ocean. The young whale, nicknamed "Humphrey", attracted throngs of curiosity seekers before he was eventually guided back to sea by rescuers. Again in May 2007, Humpbacks were sighted in Rio Vista. "Delta" and "Dawn," mother and calf, stopped at least twice in the river near the town.Rio Vista is home to the annual Bass Festival in October.
